Nutritional Calculators
Contributed by Sisyphus, a member of Bee's Candida Support Group, that you are welcome to join.
There are many Nutritional Calculators available, and they all have their weaknesses and strengths.
-
Fitday
This is the Nutritional Calculator Bee recommends - see Fitday.com — How To Use It
for step by step instructions.
- USDA Foods Database
This is the source of data for almost every U.S. based nutritional calculator on the web. Most of the syndicated websites do not offer access to the entire database. Downside: it only lists one food item at a time. Upside: the data is "extremely" detailed.
- What's in the Foods You Eat
This is a "secret" link from a site run by the USDA REE (Research, Education and Economics) Division. It overlaps the main USDA database but sometimes has listings for foods the main database doesn't show. There may be a more updated or "working" version of the USDA database.
- Calorie King
This one is really fast and easy, but provides only the major nutrients, i.e. similar to food labels. The big advantage is that it lists thousands of "commercial" food items from restaurants and grocers, by name. You can find out what is in things like "Side Order of Chili's Avocado Ranch Dressing" or "Applebee's Oriental Chicken Salad Roll-Up with tortilla, no fries."
- DaysWorth
This site is based in the United Kingdom, and their data is sometimes considerably different from the others. Makes you wonder. It lists all the macro- and micro-nutrients EXCEPT SUGAR (interesting omission... always wondered about British dentistry...). But despite that shortcoming, I like it because (a) it draws the table horizontally instead of vertically, (b) it lets you stack up row after row so you can look at a whole "day's worth" of foods at one time, and (c) it provides an alternative for anyone who doesn't necessarily trust the USDA's figures.
- Book: "The Composition of Foods"
U.S. Agriculture Handbook #8 from the Agricultural Research Service, US Department of Agriculture by Bernice Kunerth Watt. It is for raw, processed and prepared foods. It includes other nutrients, and charts for the types of fats and the amount of magnesium in foods. They are available at libraries.
