Irregular Heartbeats & Heart Palpitations

Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), heart attacks, and general endothelial dysfunction seem related to reduced levels of a substance called nitric oxide. Endothelial is a single layer of smooth, thin cells that lines the heart, blood vessels, lymphatics, and cavities of the body.
One of the main functions of nitric oxide is to help the coronary blood vessels relax and dilate (widen). When these vessels are relaxed, there is more blood flow to the heart.
"Heart palpitations are simply electrical misfires, often anxiety or stress-related, that everyone experiences from time to time. Unless they occur with great frequency, they are often harmless and insignificant," says Lou-Anne Beauregard, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey. Minimizing stress, and simple Deep Breathing Exercises can alleviate such episodes.
A very important cause of both benign and potentially lethal cardiac arrhythmias is low blood nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide production is supposed to be high in the nose. Nasal nitric oxide can be increased 15 to 20 times by strong humming (the nasal vocalization), thus increasing blood nitric oxide levels.
Arrhthymias can be stopped simply by humming very strongly for a while. This was discovered conicidentally when learning how to help chronic sinusitis. No benefit may occur unless humming is done for at least an hour a day for several days.
Did you know that nitroglycerin, a drug that dilates arteries, decreases the workload on the heart, and that it is converted to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is a natural vasodilator – that is, it widens the blood vessels – which is produced by the body itself. The main effects of nitroglycerin, and the reason it is prescribed are:
- chest pains subside
- blood pressure decreases
- heart rate increases
Omega-3 and Irregular Heartbeats
The role of omega-3 fatty acids are several but recent studies report that their most profound effects may be on arrhythmogenesis (irregular heartbeat) as well as inflammation.
The GISSI study reported a substantial decrease in cardiovascular events as a result of fish oil supplementation [or cod liver oil that contains omega 3 and vitamins A and D]. Take 2,000-3,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids daily [when taking fish oils also take vitamins A and D.]
Many diseases, as well as the aging process itself, increases clot formation and subsequent coronary artery occlusion (blocking). Decrease in blood flow can create ischemia (low blood flow) which leads to cell death, inflammation and platelet (blood cell fragments involved in the formation of blood clots) aggregation (clumping).
Natural products like Vitamin E, 400 IUs per day, and Magnesium 300-600mgs/day have similar properties [must also take an equal amount of calcium]. Natural substances that also help are Omega-3 found in cod liver oil or fish oils (EPA plus DHA should be 2,000 to 3,000mg/day [also need vitamins A and D when taking fish oils only].
Several studies have shown that magnesium [citrate] to be an excellent preventative of dysrythmias (irregular heartbeat). Its use can prevent the serious rhythm disturbances that often accompany heart attack. Long-term use is very helpful since most patients are magnesium deficient [take at least 300 mg of calcium citrate twice a day, along with 300 mg of magnesium citrate twice a day.]
How to Increase Nitric Oxide Levels Naturally
- Breath through the nose, which mixes nitric oxide contained in nasal passages with oxygen.
- Humming increases the amount of nitric oxide produced in the nasal passages.
- For overall health do Deep Breathing Exercises.
- Exercise to increase nitric oxide levels in the blood vessels, but unhealthy people shouldn’t over-exercise which depletes energy, nutrients and other resources the body needs to get healthy—see Mild Forms of Exercise.
- Take magnesium citrate supplements, which regulate the heartbeat, but it is also important to take calcium citrate. Calcium and magnesium doses should be a 1:1 ratio, 300 mg of each twice a day, and sometimes more magnesium than calcium is required.
Increasing nitric oxide improves blood flow, normalizes heartbeat, and reduces the chances of having a heart attack.
